Kitchen with a Hundred Mile View

Situated on high a hill, this home built in 1970, boasts large rooms, lots of windows and expansive views of the rolling Connecticut hills. A wall of windows and large deck takes full advantage of the panoramas.

BEFORE: Our clients have lived in their home for 20 years and felt that now was the time to remodel their kitchen. The original space felt cramped in relation to the rest of the home, so our project begins with demolition of the existing kitchen and hallway, including the hall closets in order to bring it more in balance, and opened up a wall between the kitchen and dining room to create a larger opening with connection between the two spaces.

AFTER: Sliding glass doors that led from the kitchen out to the deck from the kitchen were removed and this section was reframed to accommodate a pair of new sliding windows.

This change allowed for a total reconfiguration of the kitchen, relocating the refrigerator and wall ovens into an area we expanded that was previously home to utility and pantry closets and desk area.

Existing light colored wood floors were refinished with a darker stain and wainscoting, crown molding and soffit details were added to coordinate with the rest of the home. To capitalize on the newly configured space, we replaced an existing peninsula with a new large island that is able to comfortably seat 5.

In place of the previous utility and pantry closets we installed new base and upper cabinetry topped with the same beautiful Taj Mahal granite used throughout the kitchen and added a prep/bar sink for greater functionality, while the countertop next to the wall ovens provides the perfect landing spot for items coming out of or going into them.

Pushing back a wall between the kitchen and hallway, and removing the existing cabinetry that had been located there allowed us to add more functional floor to ceiling storage, while the paneled dishwasher and beverage refrigerator gives the kitchen perimeter and island a cohesive, uninterrupted look.

Special features in this kitchen include an appliance garage and spice pullouts flanking the induction cooktop.
